Servicing Stabilitrak / Fixing Heavy Van Sway

! THIS IS DANGEROUS IF LEFT UNHANDLED !
Introduction
If you have ever been on the road and had the van say in the center cluster:
SERVICE STABILITRAK
...the steering system has lost calibration and needs resetting. Failure to reset
said systems on the vans results in the full poor design of the overall van to
reveal itself at high loads.
The Stabilitrak system is responsible for controlling the way that you imply
the van to steer. The word imply is used here to signify the fact that when
driving a car, you don't actually have control of the direction of the car;
you have a desire to move the car a certain direction and the machinery reacts
to said direction. In the vans used at the company, and most vans and new cars,
steering angle sensors are implemented all over the steering column. Steering
sensors themselves have no absolute idea of where their home position is for the
most part, and sometimes need to be recalibrated.
When this calibration starts to fail, the dangers of it misperforming can become
apparent in swaying, crabbing (seeming to move down the road a little sideways
when straight), and certain acceleration or decelration procedures. This is because
you are no longer implying your direction correctly to your actual
direction.
Step ⇨ by ⇨ Step
The 2017 and Older Vans
These vans are a little bit weirder in how they calibrate. It is better than the 2019 van's system in theory. To calibrate, the edges of the available steering need to be given to the steering angle angle sensor. Some caution should be taken that the wheel gets fully cranked to the sides.
- If the van is on, turn it off and remove the key. The next steps must be done in somewhat rapid succession.
- Turn the van on, do not let go of the brake pedal.
- Crank the steering wheel all the way to the right.
- Crank the steering wheel all the way to the left.
- Center the tires.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Avoid tiny twitchy steering movements while driving.
The 2019 Van
This van is a pretty straight forward. If you have read the introduction, this one calibrates its steering angle using center calibration. Because of its reliance on knowing where center is, caution must be taken to calibrate this in a GOOD center.
- While the van is on, rotate the wheel to the center position.
- When the wheel is at center position, rock the wheel lightly right and left to ensure that it is truly center. Verify outside of the car.
- On the main dash cluster, use the buttons located directly to the left of the
clusters decent:
...to navigate to the option that says: PRESS ✓ TO RELEARN TIRE POSITIONS - Hit the check button on the control button cluster to confirm through the
dialogs till you see a prompt that says
TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE. The van will also honk twice. - Avoid tiny twitchy steering movements while driving.
